Applications of glass filter silica

This filter media is specifically designed to meet the requirements of different facilities, enhancing the efficiency and performance of existing filtration systems.

Ultra Clear is used for the treatment of drinking water from lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and wells, as well as for:

  • Wastewater for reuse as potable drinking water
  • Brackish water and seawater prior to desalination membranes
  • Private and public swimming pools
  • Aquaculture and public marine or freshwater aquariums
  • Water supplies for pharmaceutical and beverage companies
  • Industrial processes requiring high-purity water

Swimming Pool Filtration Using Glass Filter Media

Glass filter media can replace sand in your swimming pool filter and double its filtration performance. It prevents biofouling, is self-sterilizing, more economical and durable, and is specifically engineered to remove impurities without requiring frequent replenishment or replacement.

Whether your pool uses saltwater, chlorine, or natural water, simply replace the existing sand in your pool filter with Ultra Clear Glass Filter Media.

The media performs effectively at all temperatures and with any oxidation method. There is no need to purchase new filtration equipment or hardware.

Silica sand typically lasts for 2–3 years, whereas glass filter media can last for up to 25 years.

The media reduces bacterial presence, prevents biofilm formation, and helps reduce chloramines and other strong disinfectant by-products in the water. It also reduces the duration and frequency of backwash cycles, providing 50% or greater savings in water consumption.

Less equipment maintenance is required because the filtration system operates under lower pressure. The media can filter water to turbidity levels of less than 0.02 NTU and a color level of 0 Pt-Co.

How to Benefit from Glass Filter Media

  1. Remove the existing filter media.
  2. Fill the filter halfway with water.
  3. Fill the filter with glass filter media.
  4. Start normal operation.

It really is that simple!

Before introducing the first layers of filter media through the top opening, it is recommended to fill the filter halfway with water. This helps prevent damage to the laterals or nozzle distribution plate caused by falling filter media.

After all the media has been added, perform a backwash cycle.

Following the backwash, place the filter in rinse mode for several minutes. Once the rinse cycle is complete, and provided that sufficient water is available, repeat the backwash and rinse cycles for a third time.

The filter bed is now ready for operation.

How Does the Filter Media Work?

The performance of a filter media is determined by its ability to capture very small particles—such as contaminants and debris—and by the surface area available for particle capture.

Sand filter media typically captures particles as small as 20 microns, while glass filter media can capture particles as small as 5 microns.

The slight negative charge of glass contributes to this improved filtration performance.

Sand primarily captures particles within the upper 6 inches of the filter bed. Contaminants are not distributed evenly throughout the filter bed. Furthermore, the natural packing characteristics of sand can result in the formation of clumps and channels, allowing water to pass through without being adequately filtered.

The lower density of glass compared with sand further improves filter efficiency, providing 20% greater water clarity. Glass filter systems also require approximately 15% less filter media for a filter of the same size.
